The MaGlobe story
MaGlobe evolved out of the real-world needs of
today's Internet-connected travelers and mobile business
professionals. An avid worldwide
business traveler, Mahesh Hinduja took a 21-day
international business trip in January 1999 to cities
including Singapore, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Los
Angeles, Miami, Barbados, Philadelphia and London.
Despite his best efforts, he found that in many
places he could not use his notebook computer to access
the Internet. In many locations he was forced to make
awkward requests to his hosts or seek out inconveniently
located Cyber Cafés. He had to choose between
third-party e-mail accounts and expensive, often
unreliable, long-distance calls to access his ISP in
Mumbai, India. Hinduja returned home with a deep
realization that travelers and mobile workers had an unfilled, sometimes
desperate need for true Internet access, from anywhere -
not limited by time zones, connection glitches or the
generosity of relative strangers.
By mid-1999 he had
finished the key specifications and engineering designs
for what would become the MaGlobe Traveler service. A prototype
was operational within four months and by March 2000 service began in selected locations in India
under the brand name UniZoom. In just six months, UniZoom
evolved into the full-fledged service - MaGlobe, now
available in over 25,000 locations in USA and Canada. MaGlobe
continues to expand today with the goal of reaching every major international travel
destination.
MaGlobe - "Internet
Access for the Traveler"
MaGlobe Traveler provides easy, economical,
universally available dial-up Internet access for
travelers anywhere in the world. MaGlobe Traveler offers
true Internet access with no hidden charges, no need to
change established e-mail addresses, no transoceanic
satellite-bounce data slowdowns, no time-outs, no
drop-offs. Travelers nowadays depend on e-mail, virtual
private networks (VPNs) and other Internet services.
Whether traveling on business or for pleasure, people
need to stay connected. MaGlobe provides a fast,
economical, access alternative to the
communication hurdles often faced by travelers.
MaGlobe Technology
MaGlobe is more than just an Internet service
aggregator. The company actually creates user accounts
on its servers and bills users directly. When a user
dials up to an affiliate ISP in the MaGlobe network, the ISP
checks with MaGlobe's servers to authenticate the user.
Because MaGlobe maintains centralized servers that
utilize industry-standard authentication protocols,
incorporation of additional ISP's is quick, easy, and requires no
additional investment in hardware or software.
MaGlobe's proprietary
AutoDialer software makes it easy for our users to connect
to the Internet by keeping a Phonebook of all access
locations. The user merely enters their username and
password and selects the location they are visiting; the
software automatically takes care of the rest.
The MaGlobe
Advantage
While competitors have positioned themselves as
service enablers and providers to member ISP's, MaGlobe
serves the customer directly. To local ISP's,
that means MaGlobe acts as a huge local customer - and
there are enormous advantages in this to MaGlobe users.
For one thing, MaGlobe
can negotiate directly with the ISP's for
competitive bulk prices instead of having to
negotiate complex access schemes involving demand
levels, data accumulators and more. As a result, MaGlobe
passes along enormous savings to end-users. To
distribute this time, MaGlobe uses a "prepaid Internet" pricing model similar to telephone company's
prepaid calling cards. It allows MaGlobe to keep its
commitment to make Internet access economical and
ensure customers only "Pay for what you use" --
Globally.
Also, MaGlobe's
centralized model allows direct support to the end user
because we can take direct responsibility for service
quality. In contrast, with others' systems, the
local ISP may or may not provide support and often does
not take any responsibility for the service quality when
outside their local network.
MaGlobe and the
Future
MaGlobe continuously works to expand our
International coverage, increasing service availability
to over 25,000 locations in USA and Canada, with the goal of reaching
every major International travel destination.
The MaGlobe
architecture is also extremely flexible. It can accommodate value-added telephony products
such as Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP), Email-to-Fax, voice calling cards,
callback services and similar products. As convergence
becomes a reality, MaGlobe will be well positioned to
offer a comprehensive range of services.
The market for these
nascent services is growing fast. According to the
Yankee Group, the worldwide market for remote access
services - including Internet access for travelers - is
expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of
55%, from US$ 430 million in 1998 to approximately US$
1.98 billion in 2002. Because of its direct service
approach, MaGlobe will be a top-tier provider of Internet access and related services at affordable
rates.
