The Modem setup is configured when you install the hardware and the relevant software. Normally these settings do not have to be changed.

However, you can check your settings to ensure that it is in line with the normal operating conditions required to dial up for internet access.

  • To check your Modem configuration, follow these steps.
  • Click on 'Start' on the desktop
  • Click on 'Settings'
  • Select 'Control Panel'

This display will show you your existing settings, which you may re-configure in case you are aware of your Modems requirements.

Proxy Servers Settings are setup in your browser to direct your requests to a specific server provided by your local ISP (Internet Service Provider). The purpose of your ISP to provide a Proxy Server is to speed up the access for popular sites from his local server, rather than access the internet by using overseas bandwidth.

This setting can be changed temporarily for the duration of your travel, which may be reverted to once you get back home. The procedure for changing the settings is as follows:

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Click on 'Tools'
Select 'Internet Options'
Go to 'Connection'
Click on 'LAN Settings'
Enable 'Automatically Detect Settings' by clicking on it
Disable 'Use a Proxy Server' by clicking on it
Click 'OK' and close window
Click 'Apply' to confirm changes
Click 'OK' to close window
Netscape Communicator
Click on 'Edit'
Select 'Preferences'
Click on 'Advanced Category'
Click on 'Proxies'
Enable the option 'Direct connection to the Internet'
Click on 'OK' to save the settings

For other browsers, kindly review their help menus.

The access speed to the internet depends on a good telephone connection to a very large extent. It has been observed that the connections in some hotels or locations, are of poor quality which makes the Modem operate at lower speeds.

The Modem rectifies the errors in the connection to its best ability, hence reducing the access speed.

Most locations provide for access at a minimum speed of 28,800bps, but this can be effected to an extent on account of the telecommunication network in the country of usage.

In case of unusual audible disturbance in the connection, you should disconnect and redial the local access number.

The access speed depends on a very large extent on a good connection to the telephone network. When connecting your equipment to the telephone line, ensure that the fitting is firm and the wire has sufficient slack to stay in place.

Disturbances on account of a loose connection will cause your line to be slow and continuously drop or disconnect.

The remedy is to check and ensure a good fitting of the connection and redial the local access number.
